What's pissin' me off-TechJedi

Hatin’ on Comics

Not so much pissin me, but a conclusion I came to. I listen to alot of other podcasts; some of them are quite fun and interesting and some of them are one man shows, but they all share one thing-nobody every downs a book. Ever. Doesn't matter how bad that book is. This is something that mystifies me. There are bad books out there, and some of them get cancelled and some of them get better, and some of them just keep going badly, somehow.

The prevailing wisdom in these casts seems to be vote with your wallet, which i firmly believe in-my wallet is not fat, never has been, never likely to be. So the second I no longer have faith a book will get better, it's gone. I vote with my wallet. But in a never ending effort to promote comics in all forms, it seems to me that vote with your wallet doesn't mean talk about your vote. This isn't the fuckin' polls in November folks, this is comics. You can talk about them, and I'm a True Believer in "call a spade a spade". A bad book is a bad book, I'm gonna say so.

I heard that "hating" on a book risks the creators' economic well being. It makes them feel bad. Well, sorry folks, but a bad book is the direct reflection of the creators abilities, and much like the tech sector, comics is a meritocracy. You produce good stuff, you gets paid, mufucka. You don't you don't. That's it. Don't tell me I have to consider the feelings of someone that made me pay to be by disappointed. What about my feelings? I earned my dough already, and i made a choice to purchase a given book, and I didn't enjoy it, for whatever reason. If a face doesn't look like a face, if it doesn't even look human or even in proportion, I don't really care that this guy "poured his heart into it" I could pour my heart into the scraggly stick figures I'm capable of cranking out, but it still isn't quality, and it still isn't something someone will want to pay for, and on top of that, it still won't deserve accolades or support. It'll be crap, and it should be labelled so.

Every where else in the universe, a professional is supposed to continually improve, and some professions are required to prove their capabilities before they ever get hired. Oh nooooo, not in comics. Long as you drew somthing you're an artist and the kid gloves just can't come off. You're a china doll. Fuck that. I fully expect this podcast and anything I write here in the blogs to be panned universally, And that's just fine-if it doesn't make someone laugh, if my logic doesn't function properly in a comment, someone should mention that. And they should do it with any vitriol they feel necessary.
